One of the most important monuments of the city of Himara is its castle, which was built in the middle of the 4th century BC and was first inhabited by the Chaonians. Located on the Barbaka hill, with a wonderful view of the Visha canyon, the Livadhi beach and the Ceraunian mountains, the Himara castle is the symbol of Himariot civilization and culture.
Lying along the coast of the Ionian Sea in southern Albania, Himara has a long history dating back to the ancient period when it was known as Kimera.
It has been renovated and rebuilt several times over the centuries and today we can find a castle which is still surrounded by its ancient walls with massive stones, and consists of characteristic houses some of which are still inhabited, thus making it one of the rare castles of this kind in Albania.
If we were to go to Himare, it would seem to us as if we were inside a painting by Qirjako Meniko, everywhere we would hear the polyphonic songs and poetry of Neço Muko and Lefter Çipa. We would not be able to stay without visiting Dhërmi, the hometown of Petro Marko, the old Qeparo, classified as a cultural asset and one of the most beautiful villages in the south, Vuno where Dhimitër Anagnosti and Odhise Grillo are from and Livadh with crystal water and white pebbles… In every step we would take along this place sculpted by antiquity, we would experience a piece of the culture, the impressive landscapes, the prominent character of the locals and its very magic.
